What is coupling?
Coupling is a mechanical device that used to connect two shafts and to transmit power. The primary purpose of coupling is to connect the units of shafts in proper alignment with one another that are manufactured separately and rotating such as generator and motor.
They allow movement to the ends, flexibility, and provide disconnection of these two devices for repairs and modifications.
There are several types of couplings in the industry but the two most common couplings are rigid coupling and flexible coupling.
What are the uses of couplings?
Now as you have deep knowledge about the parts of couplings, manufacturing of coupling, and functioning of couplings. As we discussed above the basic function of coupling is to transmit the power to a device.
As the system starts, parts of the couplings start vibrating and moving after that the alignments get change. Here the use of coupling comes along.
The basic use of it is to align all the parts in a proper way either in a parallel way or based on the orientation.
End float is another problem which is caused due to the axial movements at the ends. In this case, the coupling has to make sure that this problem is dealt with in a right manner.
There are some also other coupling devices that assigned the job of reducing the vibration and shock which are the major reasons for causing problems.
Another major use of coupling is this is responsible for the protection of the machine.
Types of Couplings
Jaw Couplings
Jaw coupling has two jaws that are interconnected with each other and an electrometric spider is placed between the two jaws. The application of this coupling is used for dampening of the torsion.
Sleeve Couplings
This type of couplings has a male spline and a female hub spline. The male spline interjects with the female hub spline along with the electrometric insert. This coupling is effective for end float and used for Hytrel or Neoprene.
Tire Coupling
The primary function of this coupling is to reduce the vibrations or shock. This is made up of Polyurethane and sometimes rubbers.
As the force is given in the form of shear this type of material flexing coupling lasts for a long time.
Disc Coupling
Generally, this types of couplings work on the transmission of torque through the different elements of flexing discs. Compression and tension are two main aspects of this coupling. They may be single or double disc pack.
Diaphragm Coupling
When it comes to the high amount of torque and speed then for this type of coupling is perfect.
The flexible part of the coupling is either through a single diaphragm or many diaphragms. It can also deal with the misalignments.
Mechanical flexing coupling
They work on the concept of sliding, rocking, or rolling of metal surfaces. They need lubrication while performing the functions. This is one of the best types of flexible couplings is divided into two type grid and gear couplings.
Roll Chain Couplings
When the speed and torque requirement becomes low ten this coupling is used. It contains a double pitch.
